2 year anniversary!
Posted by Peter on Thursday, 28 February, 2008
Well, it’s not today, and it’s certainly not very romantic, but yesterday was my Japanese learning 2 year anniversary! The 27th of February! The truth is, it might be the 26th or the 28th, because it was about a week after I started learning that I decided to put it into my phone calendar. But hey, it’s probably right!
Well, yeah, that’s about all I have to say about that. Not very exciting, but significant to me.
It’s also interesting to note that in the past few months after university finished, I’ve been learning at such a faster rate! I can only imagine how things will be from now on, especially once I’m living in Japan.

Yo,its sam, guy living in Japan. You blocked me a while ago I believe.
Honestly I think coming to Kansai from learning Japanese by itself, is going to be very frustrating for you. If it were tokyo it’d be slightly better since they speak more ‘average’ and it’s relatively close to news/anime/drama but Kansai is going to be a big leap. I know because I went through the same thing.
Anyway, good luck.

Oh hi, I blocked you? lol! I don’t remember. Skype or msn?
I agree, going to Kansai will be frustrating, but the different language is not what I base my decisions on, and news/anime/drama is not a big deal either. Main thing for me is atmosphere and people. I looked into it heaps and asked a million people who have been to Japan and there seems to be a unified opinion that Kansai has very chilled and friendly people with good humour when compared to other parts of Japan. Wherever I go, that is the place I will adapt to, and even standard Japanese is above me right now, so Kansai seems the best choice for my personality. But I know it will be difficult, it’s kind of half the point.

I guess it depends on your outlook. I really enjoyed the atmosphere and people of Tokyo.
I’m not saying the language barrier will be particularly difficult, since there’re a lot of gaijin that live here for 10+ years and still can’t hold a conversation in Japanese. It’s relatively easy to simply live out a lifestyle completely in english if you wanted to. It’s just if you’re studying the language it’s frustrating since the spoken language and the written language has a gaping hole.
And I think It’d be very hard to comprehend say…the news since its so so different from everyday speech. Tomomi said she had a problem similar to that.. in that she studied in new zealand but a lot of the tv is in american english, which made it very hard to comprehend.
but good luck, must be excited. I was very excited before i first came to Japan. You’ll be moving close to me from what I hear
